Amateur Radio Equipment

The world of amateur radio – also known as ham radio – is a fulfilling hobby and experience for millions of individuals worldwide. Defined as ‘amateur’ to distinguish it from commercial radio usage or broadcasting, the hobby is officially regulated and coordinated by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) which spans various regions and countries. In Singapore, amateur radio licence is issued by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), which develops and regulates the converging infocomm and media sectors in Singapore.

Tecomart is a reliable supplier of amateur radio equipment to individuals interested in joining the ham radio community. Our catalogue includes transceivers, repeaters, rotators, and other accessories.

Operating a Ham Radio in Singapore

Although owning, installing and operating an amateur radio is legal in Singapore, one needs to get the appropriate licence to transmit on amateur radio frequencies. There are around 100 licensed ham radio operators in Singapore, and you can obtain a General or Restricted licence from the IMDA after passing the respective examination. A General Class licence will be issued to individuals who passed Parts I and II of the Radio Amateur’s Examination, while the Restricted Class licence is issued to those who have passed Part I of the Radio Amateur’s Examination, and will only be allowed to operate on the VHF band allocated to the Amateur Services.

Equipment Needed for a Ham Radio

The equipment you require to begin on your amateur radio journey may vary according to the frequency you wish to use, and the licence class you qualify for. For most beginners, these are the basics to take note of:

1. Transceivers

Transceivers are devices that combine transmission and receiving capabilities, usually over the High Frequency (HF) radio wave spectrum. Look for options like the Icom IC-7100 that is capable of handling HF, Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) waves to broaden your communication range as much as possible. For a more portable option, you can also explore handheld transceivers or mobile transceivers like the IC-V86 or IC-V3500.

2. Antenna

Your transceiver requires an antenna to enable it to connect you to other ham radio operators. Antennas like the Daiwa HA20 and Diamond Antenna RH-536 are essential to make full use of your transceiver, and some antennas even come with waterproofing so you can even operate them outdoors or in the wild.

3. Repeaters

Repeaters receive a signal on one frequency, before retransmitting (repeating) it on a different frequency. This extends your communication range, especially for mobile or handheld transceivers.

4. Rotators

Rotators help to rotate, point, and fix your ham radio antenna in place during communication. This ensures the signal is steady, without you having to manually adjust the direction of the antenna on your own.

How to Choose the Best Ham Radio Equipment?

Given the vast range of ham radio equipment needed, it is best to first determine your end goal so that informed purchases are made. This is because the equipment being selected for the ham radio is crucial to the success of the operator. Decide on the type of activities that you are interested in — are you looking to have casual conversations with club members or are you interested in emergency communications? Based on this, you will need to consider the range you expect to make contacts to help you decide on the type of ham radio equipment you need.
